Thailand among first in Asia to welcome OpenAI’s Sora app

Southeast Asia — OpenAI has launched its Sora app in Thailand, making the country one of the first in Asia to access the company’s next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) video creation platform. The app is also being rolled out in Vietnam and Taiwan.

According to OpenAI, Thailand was chosen for its vibrant creative community and growing influence in digital storytelling. Since its debut in the United States and Canada in early September, the Sora app has gained significant traction, surpassing one million downloads in less than five days. The platform allows creators to generate short, hyper-realistic videos and remix existing ones.

The app is now available for free on iOS in Thailand, without the need for an invite code. OpenAI said it is starting with generous usage limits to encourage exploration, though these may change over time.

Powered by Sora 2, OpenAI’s advanced video generation model, the app enables users to:

  • Create realistic video content from prompts.
  • Remix and reinterpret videos from other creators.
  • Discover new clips through a customisable feed.
  • Step into scenes through the “Cameos” feature, which lets users insert themselves into videos after a one-time video and audio verification process.

The Sora app also supports the Thai language, allowing users to create content that reflects local culture, humour, and style.

Alongside the launch, OpenAI has introduced Character Cameos, a feature that allows users to create video cameos of characters—ranging from pets and doodles to imaginary personas—which can then be reused in future projects or shared with others. To mark the launch, OpenAI has released a Halloween “starter pack” featuring characters such as Dracula, Frankenstein, Ghost, Witch, and Jack-O-Lantern.

Thai television personality Woody Milintachinda, one of the app’s early testers, said, “Sora allows me to bring ideas to life in a way that immediately resonates with audiences. They can see and feel the story unfold. It has also given me a unique platform to share my experiences with a wide community of creators and storytellers, not just in Thailand but the world, inspiring new forms of connection and creativity. With Sora, the creative possibilities truly feel limitless.”

OpenAI stated that it is launching Sora in Thailand with a focus on responsibility and safety. The company also said the app’s feed is designed to encourage creativity rather than prolonged scrolling and that users retain full control over their likeness when using the Cameos feature. All videos generated through Sora include both visible and invisible digital watermarks to ensure authenticity.

Additional safeguards include restrictions for teenage users, such as daily limits on video generations and tighter controls on cameo permissions. Parental controls will also be available through ChatGPT, allowing parents to manage content and messaging settings.

OpenAI said these measures aim to support responsible use of the Sora platform while empowering creators to explore new forms of storytelling.

Recently, OpenAI has also partnered with PayPal to enable payments through ChatGPT. Ahead of this, the company in the United States has also introduced ‘Instant Checkout,’ a feature that allows direct purchase from the app.It can be remembered that ChatGPT in September also launched ChatGPT Pulse for Pro mobile users, allowing personalised daily updates for US users.
