United States – PayPal has announced a partnership with OpenAI that will enable users of ChatGPT to make instant payments through the platform, as part of the adoption of the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP).
The collaboration aims to allow millions of ChatGPT users to complete purchases using PayPal, while PayPal will handle payment processing for merchants using OpenAI’s Instant Checkout feature. The company also plans to connect its network of tens of millions of merchants to ChatGPT, giving businesses an additional channel to reach customers.
“Hundreds of millions of people turn to ChatGPT each week for help with everyday tasks, including finding products they love, and over 400 million use PayPal to shop,” said Alex Chriss, president and chief executive officer of PayPal.
Alex added, “By partnering with OpenAI and adopting the Agentic Commerce Protocol, PayPal will power payments and commerce experiences that help people go from chat to checkout in just a few taps for our joint customer bases.”
Moreover, the integration will also include PayPal’s digital wallet, offering users access to multiple funding options such as bank accounts, balances, and cards, along with PayPal’s buyer and seller protections and post-purchase services, including tracking and dispute resolution.
PayPal will also support OpenAI’s Instant Checkout through its delegated payments API, managing card payment processing.
For merchants, the ACP integration will enable small businesses and major retail brands across various sectors, including apparel, beauty, home improvement, and electronics, to make their product catalogs discoverable within ChatGPT. The system, which is expected to launch in 2026, will be powered by PayPal’s ACP server, designed to manage merchant routing, payment validation, and orchestration without requiring individual merchant integrations.
Beyond commerce, PayPal announced that it is expanding its internal use of OpenAI technologies, including scaling access to ChatGPT Enterprise for its 24,000 employees, adopting Codex for engineering, and increasing the utilization of OpenAI’s APIs to support product development and customer experience initiatives.
Existing and prospective PayPal merchants can register their interest through the company’s website.
PayPal noted that the announcement contains forward-looking statements, which are subject to risks and uncertainties that may cause actual results to differ from expectations. Further details can be found in the company’s filings with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
