USA – OpenAI has announced the preview launch of ChatGPT Pulse, a new feature available to Pro users on mobile. Generally, Pulse is designed to provide personalised daily updates by conducting proactive research based on a user’s chats, feedback, and connected applications, such as Google Calendar.
The updates appear as topical visual cards that can be scanned or expanded for more detail. According to OpenAI, the features were made to take ‘the first step toward a more useful ChatGPT’.
It functions by generating updates once a day, while each night, ChatGPT synthesises information from memory, chat history, and direct feedback to determine what is most relevant.
Users, from here, can choose to connect Gmail and Google Calendar for additional context, enabling the system to draft meeting agendas, suggest restaurants for upcoming trips, and provide reminders, amongst others. These integrations are optional and can be managed in the settings.
Additionally, the updates shown in Pulse are subject to safety checks to avoid harmful or policy-violating content.
Fidji Simo, CEO of Application at OpenAI, shared, “The chat interface was the first step, allowing people with no technical expertise to use AI through simple conversation. But with chat, you still have to give specific instructions, and understand what AI has the ability to do. The next frontier is agents: AI assistants that can take action on your behalf and work like a team alongside you.”
Accordingly, the feature allows users to curate what is included in their daily edition. Options include requesting specific types of information, such as event roundups, skill-building tips, or sports updates. Feedback can be given through quick ratings, and users can review or delete their feedback history.
Each edition of Pulse is cleared daily unless saved in a chat or added to the conversation history through a follow-up. OpenAI said the feature is “meant to work for you, not to keep you scrolling,” with the intention of providing focused, relevant updates that can be acted on quickly.
Fidji added, “We’re building AI that lets us take the level of support that only the wealthiest have been able to afford and make it available to everyone over time. And ChatGPT Pulse is the first step in that direction – starting with Pro users today, but with the goal of rolling out this intelligence to all.”
