Japan – Japanese snack food maker Calbee, Inc. has announced that it will temporarily revise packaging specifications for select products due to supply instability affecting certain raw materials amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
In a notice on its official website, Calbee said the measure is “intended to help maintain a stable supply of products”.
A total of 14 variants across its potato chips, Kappa Ebisen, and Frugra lines will be affected. Packaging for the products will be limited to two ink colours.
The revised packaging is expected to roll out in stores from the week of May 25, 2026.
The company clarified that the change applies only to a limited number of products and will not affect product quality.
“Calbee will continue to respond flexibly and promptly to changes in its operating environment, including geopolitical risks, and remains committed to maintaining a stable supply of safe, high-quality products. We ask for your understanding and continued support,” the company said.
In a separate report,NHK World Japan said that prior to the announcement, company officials visited the agriculture ministry to explain the decision.
According to the report, the ministry said it would respond to consultations on the procurement of petroleum products, together with government offices overseeing food industry businesses.
