Starbucks launches new concept store in Hong Kong, blending coffee with modern Chinese artistry

Hong Kong – Starbucks Hong Kong has opened its latest concept store at the Hong Kong Palace Museum (HKPM) in the West Kowloon Cultural District, showcasing modern Chinese artistry, local art installations, and a range of exclusive beverages.

Designed as a tranquil retreat from the bustling city, the HKPM concept store offers a space where visitors can enjoy coffee amid creativity and cultural expression. The location blends Chinese cultural heritage, local artistry, and Starbucks coffee craftsmanship for a contemporary yet refined experience.

The store’s architecture draws inspiration from Chinese tradition while incorporating modern design elements. Guests are welcomed by Chinese “Starbucks” brush calligraphy signage created by local calligrapher Westley Wong. Inside, Elsa Ngai’s layered botanical artwork, rendered in mineral pigments and gold leaf, depicts subtle narratives of the coffee plant’s life cycle.

A ceramic wall installation by porcelain sculptor Leo Wong, inspired by Yunnan’s landscapes and Chinese philosophy, offers a textured and dynamic interpretation of coffee botanicals. Together, the works of the three Hong Kong artists celebrate craftsmanship and invite visitors to slow down and engage with the details.

The HKPM concept store is also the first to debut the Hong Kong Palace Museum Collection, curated in collaboration with the museum. The collection draws from the imperial treasures of the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1911) dynasties, translating historical motifs into contemporary Starbucks merchandise.

In addition, the store introduces Hong Kong’s first Starbucks engraving service, allowing customers to personalise selected tumblers with icons and messages. Visitors can further explore the craft of coffee through Coffee Micro-Experiences, which include hand-brewing sessions, latte art, and curated coffee flights led by Starbucks baristas. The store also features the HKPM Stamp Rally, where guests collect stamps using a jade seal to reveal themed illustrations inspired by the museum’s architecture.

Overlooking Victoria Harbor, the store combines scenic views with artistic installations, creating an environment suitable for reflection, conversation, or simply enjoying a coffee. Seasonal and store-exclusive beverages, including the Plum Blossom series and the Turmeric Oatmilk Latte, complement the experience without dominating the focus on the space and art.

Starbucks has also introduced themed treats such as the Golden Pistachio Pyramid Cake and Mummy’s Secret Roll. Alongside the food offerings, the Hong Kong Palace Museum Ancient Egypt Collection incorporates cultural symbols from ancient Egypt into Starbucks design, providing visitors with a unique blend of art, history, and coffee culture.

Alan Chan, general manager at Starbucks Hong Kong and Macau, said, “Our new store at the Hong Kong Palace Museum is a particularly meaningful addition for the Hong Kong market. This welcoming space brings together the richness of Chinese culture and the creativity of local artistry for visitors to experience the richness of Hong Kong’s culture.”

“Through thoughtfully curated products and experiences – from contemporary store design to exclusive food, beverages and merchandise – we aim to reimagine the Starbucks Third Place experience with local elements to welcome customers and foster deeper, more meaningful connections with the communities we serve across Hong Kong,” he added.
