Melbourne – As competition intensifies in New Zealand’s craft beer market, Panhead is sharpening its premium positioning with a comprehensive brand refresh developed alongside independent brand design agency Weave.
Commissioned by Lion, the overhaul introduces a new strategic platform, “Beer, Engineered,” designed to reinforce Panhead’s identity as New Zealand’s leading luxury craft beer brand while creating a scalable foundation for future growth across packaging, retail, communications, and product innovation.
Rather than reinventing the brand, Weave focused on refining the assets that have helped Panhead build strong recognition among craft beer drinkers.
The refreshed identity features an updated wordmark, a redrawn winged pint icon, new typography, an evolved colour palette, and a cohesive design system that brings greater consistency across the portfolio.
The most visible change comes in the packaging, with a predominantly black can architecture intended to strengthen shelf presence and improve brand recognition in an increasingly crowded retail environment.
Meanwhile, Panhead’s Hazy range has been given a distinctive gradient treatment to make product navigation easier while maintaining a unified visual identity.
According to Dan Cookson, Executive Creative Director at Weave, the project was about strengthening an already distinctive brand rather than changing it.
“Panhead already had enormous brand equity. Our role was to sharpen what made the brand distinctive, creating a brand system that’s more confident, more consistent and better aligned with the way Panhead thinks, builds and brews,” Cookson said.
He added that the new “Beer, Engineered” positioning extends beyond packaging, providing a strategic platform that can support the brand’s future communications and innovation while staying true to its garage-built heritage.
Kristin Paddy, Senior Brand Manager at Panhead, said the refresh reflects both the brand’s evolution and changing expectations within the craft beer category.
“Panhead has earned its place as New Zealand’s leading luxury craft beer brand through the quality of its beer and the strength of its personality. This evolution strengthens those equities, creating a more premium, cohesive brand experience that will help drive recognition and growth for years to come,” Paddy said.
She added that the redesigned brand system has been developed to improve portfolio navigation, increase shelf recognition, and support the brand’s premium positioning as competition within the craft beer segment continues to grow.
The refreshed identity is rolling out across Panhead’s full product portfolio this month before expanding to retail environments, marketing communications, and consumer experiences.
