Manila, Philippines — In line with its 40th anniversary, SM Supermalls has opened the SM Sensory Lab at SM Mall of Asia, described as the country’s first dedicated sensory-friendly space designed for individuals on the autism spectrum and other neurodiverse communities.
Developed in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA), and the Autism Society Philippines (ASP), the initiative aims to promote greater accessibility, inclusion, and support for people with sensory sensitivities.
According to SM Supermalls, the space is intended to provide a calming environment that helps reduce sensory overload often experienced in crowded public areas. The initiative also reflects the broader efforts made to foster more empathetic and inclusive public spaces across the Philippines.
Present at the launch were Autism Society Philippines national spokesperson and Autism Works country manager Mona Magno-Veluz, ASP chair emerita Dang Koe, DSWD undersecretary Fatima Aliah Dimaporo, SM Supermalls president Steven Tan, and NCDA executive director Glenda Relova.
Moreover, the SM Sensory Lab is a conscious effort aimed at creating more inclusive environments for individuals with diverse needs. In March this year, SM Supermalls also expanded its learning hub activities, aimed at celebrating storytelling and creativity. During the same month, the company also unveiled the Trash-to-Cash initiative, advocating for a waste-free community. The program is part of SM Supermalls’ ‘Waste-Free Future’ campaign running since 2007.
