Amsterdam, Netherland — Peter ter Kulve has announced his departure from Unilever after 37 years as The Magnum Ice Cream Company prepares to operate as an independent business.
He will continue to lead Magnum as its CEO, confirming the move in a message to colleagues, partners and friends ahead of the transition taking effect this Saturday.
Reflecting on his long career, he said, “After 37 fantastic years, I will formally say goodbye to Unilever this Saturday, as The Magnum Ice Cream Company becomes an independent business, which I am proud to continue to lead as its CEO.”
He added that his time at Unilever included ‘memories of distant places,’ ‘crazy and exciting business challenges,’ and ‘amazing people,’ noting he remains in touch with many former teams.
He also highlighted his attachment to Magnum’s clarity and purpose, saying, “I learned that ‘the scoop is more important than the spreadsheet’, and we really do make life taste better.”
He also praised Unilever’s “extraordinary talent machine”, which he said the new company cannot easily replicate.
He thanked Unilever for its support during the two-year transition, stating, “You helped our now 19,000 colleagues move from a blank sheet of paper to a listed company.”
Wishing Unilever and CEO Fernando Fernandez success in their ongoing transformation, he concluded the announcement by noting, “Just like a Magnum, this feels like the perfect moment for a clean, satisfying crack as we go our separate ways.”
