Heckler expands to Shanghai, bringing together veteran leaders to helm new creative studio

China – Independent creative studio Heckler has opened a new office in Shanghai, reuniting industry veterans Lily Li, Barry Greaves, and Steven Marolho to lead the studio as part of the company’s growing creative network across Asia.

Founded in Sydney in 2010, Heckler has established itself as one of the region’s leading post-production, design, and visual effects studios, with a portfolio that includes work for Apple, Netflix, Mercedes-Benz, Amazon, Riot Games, and Coca-Cola.

The Shanghai launch strengthens its regional footprint and creates a direct creative bridge to Heckler Singapore, forming an independent network focused on collaboration, innovation, and speed.

More than a new office, the move also marks a reunion for Li, Greaves, and Marolho, who have each played key roles in shaping China’s production and visual effects industry over the past decade. Their shared track record includes founding Smoke & Mirrors Shanghai, launching MPC Shanghai, and leading The Mill Shanghai. Now, the trio returns under the Heckler banner to drive a new chapter of creative excellence in the market.

“This is about freedom,” said Li, partner and managing director of Heckler Shanghai. “Heckler gives us the independence to make bold, beautiful work on our own terms, with the best people in the business.”

Marolho, partner and COO, added, “We’ve got the band back together. For us, it’s about showing up – for our clients, our team, and each other. Continuing to deliver the high-quality creative work we’ve dedicated our careers to bringing to the China market and across the region.”

“Heckler is the studio we always wanted to build,” shared Greaves, partner and ECD. “One that puts people before process and values creativity and collaboration above all else.”

Built for the next generation of creative production, Heckler Shanghai integrates world-class VFX, design, and finishing pipelines with secure, AI-assisted workflows designed to enhance artistry and storytelling.

According to the co-founders, the opening of the Shanghai studio marks a pivotal moment for creative production in Asia.

“Shanghai has always been a creative lightning rod for Asia,” said Will Alexander, co-founder and CEO of Heckler. “With Lily, Barry, and Steve leading our next chapter, we’re reigniting a culture built on artistry, independence, and fearless craft. This is Heckler’s biggest statement yet.”

“We’re here to make some noise,” Alexander added. “To push culture forward, to champion craft, and to remind the world that independence is our superpower. Asia just got its new creative heartbeat – one led by people who still believe in the magic of making.”

“AI isn’t replacing creativity,” said Jamie Watson, co-founder and CCO of Heckler. “It’s amplifying it, and the future belongs to the studios that know how to harness these tools without losing their soul. The right alchemy happens where technology meets humanity, and that’s exactly where Heckler lives.”
