OpenAI launches group chats in ChatGPT for collaborative conversations

Singapore — OpenAI has introduced group chats in ChatGPT, allowing users to collaborate with others and the AI within the same conversation. The feature is currently rolling out as a pilot in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan for logged-in users on ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans, with plans to expand globally based on early feedback.

The group chat function also enables users to add friends, family, or colleagues to a shared space for planning, brainstorming, or decision-making. Users can, for example, organise trips, draft outlines, or discuss design ideas while ChatGPT assists with suggestions, summarisation, and content organisation.

To create a group chat, users may tap the people icon in any new or existing chat. Each group chat is separate from private conversations, and participants can be invited via a shared link. The system also supports up to twenty participants per chat. ChatGPT adapts its responses based on conversation context and user preferences, and participants can customise the AI’s behaviour using specific instructions for tone or style.

OpenAI also emphasised that group chats are designed with privacy in mind, and that ChatGPT does not use personal memories in group chats, and conversations cannot influence the AI’s memory of other interactions. 

Additional safeguards are in place for users under 18, with reduced exposure to sensitive content, and parental controls can disable group chats entirely.

Early feedback from the pilot has been positive, and OpenAI intends to refine the experience as more users engage with the feature. The company views group chats as the first step towards creating shared, interactive spaces where users can collaborate and engage with ChatGPT collectively.

Most recently, OpenAI has also launched Sora, a next-generation AI video platform in Southeast Asia.
