Philippines – Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) commuters can now use Mastercard to pay fares, making way for smarter and more accessible transit experiences. The new payment mode enables commuters to simply tap their Mastercard credit, debit, and prepaid cards.
Introducing ‘Tap & Go’ to commuters in Metro Manila, Mastercard cardholders can enjoy flexibility and convenience in their journeys. The new capability also extends to cardholders using e-wallets on NFC-enabled Android smartphones.
While encouraging digital payments, Mastercard is also offering advanced safety and security features, protecting commuters from card skimming and payment fraud.
The move brings global best practices to Metro Manila, reflecting the rise of open-loop systems in Southeast Asia. The system is already operating in major cities globally, including London, Sydney, and Singapore.
Open-loop systems eliminate the need for transit cards and cash for fare payments, which can be a barrier to seamless experiences.
Being the first to introduce ‘Tap & Go’ to the Philippines, Mastercard supports the government’s goal to have a smarter and more efficient urban mobility.
