Payments complete every consumer’s purchasing journey, which is why it became a necessity to ensure that all payments, before even being made, are secure. This expectation revolves around all modes of payment: in cold cash, through card, bank transfers, QR payments or codes, installments, and in all the other ways the zeroes get accounted to the next.

In recent advancements, e-wallets have become a go-to payment tool. Transactions on smartphones or computers have eased the weight of carrying physical wallets. While going digital might seem like a seamless move, this small shift has created a vast influence on the entire e-commerce industry. One that has redefined the whole customer experience.

In this latest MARKETECH APAC What’s NEXT in Marketing Interview with Vietnam Payment Solution Joint Stock Company’s Nguyen Thi Thu Huong, e-wallets emerge as catalysts in reshaping Vietnam’s digital commerce landscape, driving accessibility, trust, and everyday value for both consumers and merchants.

From transactions to experiences

Like in almost every part of the globe, e-wallets have become a necessary payment option. It is nothing different in Vietnam’s case: “Consumers now expect fast, seamless, and secure digital payments — and that expectation is influencing how merchants design their customer journeys.”

Huong added that with the rise of mobile payments, the buying process has become a key part of a customer’s experience, even sharing that today’s e-commerce journey has met a shift toward mobile-first shopping behaviors, impulsive purchases enabled by seamless payments, and an increasing number of small and medium merchants going digital.

She also shared that in VNPAY’s case, the practice revolves around continuously improving convenient users’ experience and integrating promotions, loyalty programs, and QR-based payments directly into merchant systems. For Huong, this creates a ‘more connected, cashless ecosystem that benefits both sides of the market’.

“The growing use of e-wallets has opened up new ways to understand and serve consumers better. At VNPAY, we focus on understanding customers’ needs and spending habits, enhancing their UX through practical, user-friendly features, and creating suitable promotions and campaigns that truly resonate with them,” Huong shared.

This approach, according to Huong, has enabled them to deliver a more engaging shopping and payment experience.

“In short, applications like VNPAY are evolving beyond payment utilities — they’re becoming dynamic digital platforms that inspire smarter spending, deepen customer engagement, and contribute to the growth of Vietnam’s digital economy,” added Huong.

E-wallets as more than a payment tool

There are three things that Huong noted for businesses to think about: the need to think mobile-first, data-smart, and ecosystem-oriented.

“Payment is no longer a backend service — it’s a strategic growth driver,” she explained.

Huong shared that she has long encouraged businesses to integrate e-wallets early in their customer journey, “By partnering with e-wallets, they have chance to better serve customers through more tailored offers, run joint promotions, and provide a frictionless checkout experience that boosts conversion.”

Additionally, businesses, as stated by Huong, should also start preparing for cross-channel payment integrations, as this enables their users to smoothly transition from online to offline environments and vice versa.

“In short, future leaders in e-commerce will be those who combine digital agility with strong customer empathy,” she remarked.

She also emphasised that encouraging e-wallet usage lies in its convenience, relevance, and everyday value.

“Vietnamese consumers embrace digital payments when they can clearly see how it makes their lives easier and more rewarding,” Huong shared.

She also highlighted that reliance on e-wallets is enabled by guaranteed smooth, rewarding, and locally tailored experiences, including quick refunds, exclusive promotions, and loyalty points.

By doing this, said Huong, e-wallets become a daily companion rather than ‘just a payment tool’.

“When users find practical benefits and enjoyable experiences in every transaction, adoption grows naturally — and digital habits become part of their lifestyle,” Huong expounded.

Building interconnected ecosystems

Looking ahead, Huong shared one certainty: that the future will be shaped by interconnected ecosystems.

Citing examples, she said, “Open banking will allow more seamless financial data sharing between banks and e-wallets, enabling personalised and contextual financial services. Digital identity will make authentication faster and safer — a key to unlocking trust in online transactions.”

In their own case at VNPAY, AI-driven insights are also explored to enhance user engagement. As innovation continues to blur the line between payment and commerce, VNPAY aims to stay at the center of this evolution, driving confidence-inspiring, inclusive, and meaningful experiences for Vietnamese consumers.

“These technologies will not only streamline the e-commerce experience but also empower consumers with more control over their data and choices.”

With the continuous evolution of digital payments, e-wallets now do not just function as a tool for convenience but as a reflection of how technology can deepen human connection in commerce. Beyond enabling smoother transactions, they are transforming how consumers interact with brands, trust financial systems, and participate in the digital economy.

Looking ahead, the future of the e-commerce ecosystem can be seen where every tap, scan, and transfer brings every consumer closer to an inclusive, innovative, and meaningful digital engagement.
