Indonesia — The ASEAN Foundation has named communications consultancy Vero as its regional media engagement partner for the “AI Ready ASEAN” programme, an initiative designed to increase AI literacy throughout Southeast Asia.
The 2.5-year programme, which launched in 2024 with a USD 5 million grant from Google.org, consists of five phases: training of trainers, in-depth AI training, a regional awareness campaign, national and regional gatherings, and research on AI within the ASEAN region. Ahead of the implementation, an e-learning platform has already been launched.
Moreover, the “AI Ready ASEAN” programme advocates for the responsible use of AI, adhering to principles of ethics, fairness, transparency, and digital inclusion. The implementation will be conducted in collaboration with local organisations in all ten member states to ensure that the training and materials are culturally relevant and accessible.
This initiative aims to reach at least 5.5 million people in the region, including young people, educators, parents, and underserved communities. Out of these, 800,000 participants are expected to receive more detailed training.
As the public relations partner, Vero’s responsibilities will include media engagement and the development of communication strategies and assets to increase the programme’s visibility and reach across the region. The firm has already managed media engagement for the programme’s first convention in February, which resulted in coverage from publications in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
According to Diah Andrini Dewi, executive account director at Vero, AI literacy and equitable adoption have become essential to ensuring that ‘everyone can participate in and benefit from this innovation’.
“We are honored to support ASEAN Foundation’s mission in building an empowered society through inclusive learning and to help amplify the reach and impact of AI Ready ASEAN.”
She added that they also recognise Google.org’s vital role in championing digital skills across the region, which to her is the ‘heart of this program.’
Additionally, the programme utilises the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement, serving as a guide, which is aligned with the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 to achieve its objectives and strengthen the region’s ability to use AI for sustainable development.
