Hong Kong — Nostalgia is McDonald’s Hong Kong’s focus in a newly-released 10-minute short film for the opening day of its first local restaurant in 1975.
As part of its ongoing 50th anniversary celebrations and produced in collaboration with creative agency DDB Group Hong Kong, the film blends historical recreation with storytelling to mark the brand’s five-decade presence in the city.
Set against the backdrop of the original Paterson street location, the micro-film features detailed period elements, including 1970s-era décor, uniforms, and packaging. The narrative was told through the eyes of “Manager Chu,” based on the true story of the restaurant’s first manager, and depicted the anticipation and challenges faced on the first day of operations.
Following its television premiere on TVB, the film will be shared in various formats across social media, accompanied by behind-the-scenes content and interviews, in line with a media strategy developed by OMD Hong Kong.
“This film is more than a tribute to our history,” said Randy Lai, CEO of McDonald’s Hong Kong. “It’s a reminder of the optimism, teamwork and community bonds that have been at the heart of McDonald’s since the very beginning. We are grateful to the many people who shared their exceptional talents on this project to capture the essence of a time and place, and of our brand.”
Andreas Krasser, CEO of DDB Group Hong Kong, added: “Nostalgia is a powerful force, especially in a city as dynamic as Hong Kong. This film is a great way of honouring the deep shared history between McDonald’s and the people of Hong Kong.”
Moreover, the production also brought together a team of well-known Hong Kong film professionals, including art director Man Lim Chung, editor William Chang Suk Ping, music composer Chan Kwong Wing, and visual effects specialist Victor Wong. Actor Nicholas Tse starred in the lead role, with a supporting cast of over 300, including actual McDonald’s employees. Tse has previously collaborated with the brand as both ambassador and menu creator and played the role of Manager Chu.
In addition to the film, McDonald’s will recreate its original 1975 restaurant in an immersive public exhibition at Freespace in West Kowloon. Running from October 1 to 19, the exhibition will include a full-scale replica of the first outlet, along with displays of vintage toys, packaging, and memorabilia from different decades.
As part of the wider “My Taste of Hong Kong” campaign, several menu items developed by Nicolas Tse will return from September 17, including the Bolognese and Fried Egg Angus Burger.
