United Kingdom – VML has announced that Mel Edwards, the agency’s global president and a veteran advertising leader, will retire in late spring 2026 after more than 30 years in the industry, including 13 years of impact across WPP, Wunderman Thompson, and VML.
Mel began her career at TBWA before moving to M&C Saatchi’s LIDA, where she rose to CEO. She joined Wunderman as UK CEO in 2012, was promoted to CEO of Wunderman EMEA in 2015, and became global CEO in 2018.
Prior to her role as VML global president, she led Wunderman Thompson, under whose leadership the network earned multiple Cannes Lions Grand Prix awards between 2021 and 2023.
A member of the WPP Executive Committee and the Ad Council Board, Mel has been a long-time advocate for inclusion in advertising. She has been recognised on the Heroes Executives Role Model list for five consecutive years and has supported initiatives such as the Magpie mentoring programme, the WISE empowerment initiative, and the LÍDERAS leadership programme in LATAM.
Most recently, she played a key role in integrating Wunderman Thompson and VMLY&R to form VML, helping shape its culture, expand service offerings, and strengthen client relationships. Under her guidance, VML has grown into a globally recognised agency, noted for both its creative work and technology expertise.
Speaking about her retirement, Mel said, “My decision to retire next year has given me time to reflect on the incredible journey I’ve had—one filled with inspiring colleagues, clients, and friends from every corner of the world.”
“I am so proud of the connected culture and expansive offerings that Jon and I have recently built together at VML. Our ability to be strategic partners with clients across both creativity and technology is truly differentiated. I’m excited to see how VML accelerates even further in the years to come. Personally, I’m looking forward to traveling with my family and enjoying my many more hours of free time,” she continued.
Mel’s decision marks the culmination of a career focused on client service, creative leadership, and advancing inclusion in the advertising industry.
“Mel has been a phenomenal leader, partner, and friend, helping to shape VML’s global network over the last two years. Her strategic vision, energy, and authentic leadership have touched so many people around the world. I am grateful for her friendship and her unwavering commitment to making VML what it is today,” said Jon Cook, Global CEO, VML.
Cindy Rose, CEO of WPP, also commented, “On behalf of WPP, I want to thank Mel for her leadership, loyalty, and passion over the last 13 years. Her influence and impact have shaped how we partner with our clients every day, and her legacy will be felt well into the future. We wish her an amazing next chapter when it begins in 2026.”
