New Zealand – HBO Max will launch as a direct-to-consumer streaming service in Aotearoa New Zealand in mid-2026.
The standalone service marks the next step in the platform’s global rollout, following its recent revamp last 2025.
The announcement follows successful launches in Australia in 2025, and in Germany and Italy so far in 2026, with further rollouts in the United Kingdom and Ireland scheduled for next month.
Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of HBO Max, has been repositioning the service in multiple markets to reach consumers directly rather than solely through third-party distribution arrangements.
The New Zealand debut represents a continuation of Warner Bros. Discovery’s international streaming expansion strategy, strengthening HBO Max’s presence across Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.
James Gibbons, president of Warner Bros. Discovery Asia-Pacific, noted that HBO Max brings together a wide range of premium content, including well-known series and films from the HBO, Warner Bros., and DC portfolios, which are popular with New Zealand audiences, as reported by World Screen.
In New Zealand, this transition comes as the existing content agreement with former distribution partners is set to conclude in mid-2026.
Michael Brooks, managing director for Warner Bros. Discovery Australia and New Zealand, said the team is progressing plans for the direct-to-consumer launch with further details to be shared in coming months.
