Philippines – A staggering 89% of leaders in the Philippines believe their company needs to adopt AI to stay competitive, according to a report from Microsoft Corp. and LinkedIn.

The report showed that AI holds value for many Filipinos at the leadership level, with 89% believing it will give them a competitive edge. This puts the Philippines ahead of its global and regional counterparts at 79% and 84%, respectively.

Meanwhile, 55% of Filipino leaders are concerned that their organisation lacks a clear plan and vision for implementing AI. Although this figure is lower than the global and regional averages of 78% and 61%, respectively, it highlights potential consequences when local companies cannot meet the growing demand for AI resources.

Microsoft and LinkedIn’s data further shows that employees want AI at work, and they are making the move to use it themselves without waiting for their companies to catch up. 

In the Philippines, 86% of Filipino knowledge workers use AI at work, higher than the global average of 75% and the regional average of 83%. 

Additionally, 83% of Filipino AI users bring their own AI tools to work, practicing what is called ‘Bring Your Own AI’ (BYOAI), which introduces privacy, security, and legal risks for companies. This trend is also observed globally, with 78% of employees participating in BYOAI, and regionally at 79%.

For employees, having skills in AI will not only benefit the company but also them as individual workers. It ‘raises the bar and breaks the career ceiling’, as the report stated. 

In the data, it was revealed that 70% of Filipino leaders now will only hire someone with AI skills, a preference that is seen in 66% and 70% of global and regional leaders, respectively.

Interestingly, a smaller percentage of Filipino leaders (68%) are willing to hire a less experienced employee with AI skills over a more experienced candidate, compared to the global and regional averages of 71% and 76%, respectively.

Furthermore, because of the growing demand for AI in the hiring market, mentions in LinkedIn job posts grew by 17%, and 142x more users globally added AI skills to their profiles as of last year.

Considering all this data, Microsoft and LinkedIn suggest that for Philippine workplaces to stay ahead, they must take advantage of demand and start investing in AI to equip their employees with tools and skills to remain competitive.

As part of the report, Microsoft and LinkedIn also discussed the rise of AI power users. An ‘AI power user’ is someone who uses technology several times a week, saving 30 minutes of work daily. 

In the Philippines, the data shows that 86% of power users frequently start their day with AI, while another 86% use it to plan for the next. Demand is high among AI power users in the Philippines. They are 52% more likely to ask coworkers about useful prompts compared to 40% of global users, and 65% more likely to experiment with different ways of using AI compared to 68% of global users.

Filipino AI power users are significantly more likely to hear from their leadership about the importance of generative AI—57% more likely from their CEO, 41% more likely from their department head, and 107% more likely from their manager’s manager, compared to 61%, 40%, and 42% for global AI power users, respectively.

However, while Filipino power users are increasingly interested in learning about technology, the report reveals that they aren’t being trained enough. 

Only 30% are more likely to get training, especially on prompts (23% more likely) and using AI for their specific role or function (37% more likely). Globally, the percentage of AI power users likely to get training is 42%, and regionally, it is 36%.

“68% of Filipino business leaders will hire a less experienced candidate with AI skills, emphasising the urgency and importance for professionals to focus on advancing their AI aptitude through upskilling. Meanwhile, our data shows a 65% increase in learning hours for the top 100 AI/GAI courses from 2022 to 2023 on LinkedIn Learning. A record number of learners took the top AI courses on LinkedIn since January 2023 across Southeast Asia, Australia, and India.”

Manila, Philippines – Majority of Filipino workers consider digital innovation crucial to their work, but only half believe that the companies they work for are putting in the resources to drive innovation, according to innovation outfit F(DEV)’s Philippine Employee Digital Readiness Report with market research firm Tangere. 

Data from the report suggests 47% of respondents cite lack of resources and support or unpreparedness for innovation as the biggest barrier to digital adoption, with budget or financial cost following at 42% and the lack of relevant knowledge or skills coming third at 38%.

Despite these barriers, Filipino employees remain keen on upskilling. 70% of respondents are willing to invest in and learn more about business innovation and leadership, whilst 65% prefer other areas of interest such as design thinking, product development, graphic design, and marketing, as well as 59% wanting to explore data-related skills such as collection, analysis, and laws. 

In upskilling outside of corporate spaces, employees have notably taken strides using outside platforms, especially social media. Notably, 44% rank TikTok as the most effective platform for consuming educational content, followed closely by YouTube at 38%, and Facebook at 36%.

Talking about the study, Xavier Marzan, group chief digital officer of the Filinvest Group and CEO of F(DEV), said, “We believe that innovation is about disrupting ourselves first before others can disrupt us. While we’ve initiated various programs internally in collaboration with industry experts, our primary objective was to gather unbiased data into employees’ perspectives on innovation and the factors that drive their ability to innovate.”

Philippines – There’s no doubt that more than just being what used to be an exciting past-time and a convenient solution, online food deliveries have now become the crucial element this pandemic for both consumers and business owners, with strict national protocols enforcing everyone to stay within the premises of their own home.

Grab, the top ride-hailing app in Southeast Asia, that soon grew into a superapp has released its first-ever ‘Food Trends Report’ in the Philippines, drawing insights from its food delivery business GrabFood for the period of 2019-2021. 

For starters, the study shows that during this period, food delivery has also served to be Filipinos’ go-to solution in battling traffic and road problems. Pre-pandemic, these were already in Filipinos’ top dilemmas, and even now that times have changed, Filipinos are dealing with them the same even amid less opportunities for cars to roam freely in the streets. 

In the study which was conducted by NielsenIQ, it shows that among the top reasons Filipinos order food delivery in 2020 is so that they don’t need to worry about traffic or parking. This is together with Filipnos’ desire to satisfy cravings for food they can’t cook, and due to simply not having the time to cook.

Due to the demands of family that has been augmented by the ongoing pandemic, the report found that it is families who have children that order the most from food delivery, with 65% of them belonging to the 25-44 year-old bracket. 

With Filipinos looking to delivery as a save from the rigorous preparations of their favorite dishes; pizza, cake, and pasta were found to be some of the favorite food items that Filipinos like to search on the Grab app. In fact, pizza was searched 6 million times on GrabFood in 2020.

What’s more, despite it being a staple only for celebrations, Filipinos’ orders for cake also grew by 2.6 times in the year 2020 compared to the previous year. 

In terms of the time of the day, it seems that it is immaterial for Filipino foodies on what time they’d prefer to put in their orders, where most orders were made for dinner, lunch, and ‘merienda’ or afternoon time. However, in 2020, Filipinos were shown to spend more on breakfast with a 35% increase in basket size for the said part of the day. 

On top of Filipinos’ delivery behavior, the average Filipino consumer is trying approximately 2-3 different restaurants in a month in 2020, with ‘variety of food’ and ‘value for money’ as their main considerations.

With Grab’s report originally dedicated to bring commercial awareness to F&B merchants, the report reveals that most of all, more F&B brands are giving food delivery a shot, with the number of monthly active merchants in GrabFood increasing by 60% in 2020. 

Aside from research insights, the report by Grab also includes content on the state of the food delivery business as a whole in the country as well as tips on digital marketing for F&B businesses. 

Statistics were derived from Grab’s internal database between 2019–2020. The research conducted also includes interviews with food industry professionals, restaurateurs, consumer surveys, and focus groups.
