Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Naga DDB Tribal has launched a Hari Raya initiative titled “Sampul Dodol,” aimed at reinterpreting the meaning behind festive gifting by shifting focus from convenience to shared effort and care.
The campaign responds to what the agency describes as the increasingly transactional nature of modern Raya traditions, where monetary gifts are often placed in decorative envelopes. According to the agency, this shift has gradually moved away from communal practices that once defined the celebration.
Through “Sampul Dodol,” the agency reimagines the traditional duit raya envelope by transforming it into a symbolic vessel representing time, labour, and collective effort. Central to the initiative is dodol, a traditional Malay delicacy known for its labour-intensive preparation process, which requires constant attention and care.
Rather than creating a conventional festive envelope, the agency focused on the process behind making dodol as a metaphor for relationships and shared experiences during Raya.
“We sometimes forget the value of simple things, in this case traditional kueh like dodol,“ said Nik Radzi, executive creative director of Naga DDB Tribal. “Dodol needs constant care. If you stop caring, it burns. If you stop paying attention, there’s 101 ways it could go wrong. The same goes for our relationships. Through Sampul Dodol, we wanted to remind ourselves and our clients that what we truly owe one another during Raya isn’t just money, it’s care and attention.”
As part of the initiative, handcrafted dodol will be distributed to the agency’s clients as a festive gesture. The agency said this reflects its intention to emphasise relationship-building through patience and attentiveness, mirroring the process required to produce the traditional sweet.
Naga DDB Tribal added that the campaign aims to encourage reflection during the festive season, particularly on how convenience has shaped contemporary practices. While modernisation has made gifting easier, the agency suggests that elements of togetherness and shared effort remain essential to the spirit of Hari Raya.
With “Sampul Dodol,” the agency hopes to highlight the value of reviving communal traditions, suggesting that meaningful connections can be reinforced through acts that require time and collaboration.
