Singapore – gov.sg has released Burst of Luck (“顺风顺水”), a heartwarming Chinese New Year festive film created by the Ministry of Digital Development and Information (MDDI) in collaboration with creative agency DSTNCT.
Set amid the comedic chaos of a reunion dinner, the film explores the importance of presence, family, and shared traditions.
Directed by rising filmmaker Cheng Chai Hong, whose debut feature We Can Save The World!!! premiered at the New York Asian Film Festival in 2025, the short stars Koh Chieng Mun, Xixi Lim, Jo Tan, and Norbin Ngoh as a family navigating an evening that spirals into unexpected disorder.
Koh portrays an exasperated matriarch whose wish for togetherness is tested when a mishap upends the celebration, reminding the family that the most meaningful gift is simply being present.
Burst of Luck marks the first instalment of gov.sg’s 2026 Festive Film series, which will also include films for Hari Raya Puasa and Deepavali.
The series exists within a shared narrative universe, inviting viewers to spot familiar faces, recurring motifs, and subtle Easter eggs that connect stories across Singapore’s multicultural calendar.
“In this digital era, we hope that this video can be a heartwarming reminder of what truly matters – family, passing traditions and values from one generation to the next, and being fully present with one another in this festive period,” said Aaron Lye, director, Campaigns and Productions, MDDI.
“Chai Hong represents a new generation of Singaporean filmmakers who are redefining what local stories can look like. Working with him, we wanted to honour the traditions we grew up with while bringing a fresh lens to how we tell them,” said Chloe Lim, Business director and partner, DSTNCT.
Lim added, “This project builds on DSTNCT’s growing portfolio in national storytelling, work that doesn’t just entertain, but helps define shared moments for Singaporeans across cultures and generations.”
Burst of Luck premiered on gov.sg channels and across broadcast and digital platforms from 3 February 2026.
