Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Payments Network Malaysia (PayNet) has introduced a new campaign to promote DuitNow QR’s cross-border payment capability, aiming to position it as a seamless way for Malaysians to make purchases in Thailand, Singapore, Cambodia and Indonesia using the same banking or e-wallet apps they rely on locally.
According to PayNet, the initiative seeks to boost awareness and usage of the Cross-Border QR feature by shifting long-held travel habits. Many Malaysians continue to default to cash and cards when overseas, viewing cash as a backup “when tech might not be reliable” and cards as a secure option due to chargebacks and fraud protections.
The campaign centres on reducing hesitation by emphasising a familiar user experience: the same app interface and payment flow, even when abroad. Users complete transactions through their bank app with existing security measures, including screen-lock, PIN, and biometrics, along with the option to set daily spending limits.
For the rollout, Chariot Agency created four country-specific films produced by Directors Think Tank and directed by Gavin Simpson. Each spot uses a visual metaphor in which a Malaysian traveller, dressed for vacation, sees their outfit instantly change into Malaysian ethnic wear the moment they pay with DuitNow QR.
“We wanted a human, memorable way to convey that feeling of familiarity,’” said Christyna Fong, creative director at Chariot. “The wardrobe shift is a simple analogy. No long explanations, just a clear signal that paying abroad can feel as easy as it does in Malaysia.”
While the campaign highlights the DuitNow QR feature, PayNet’s broader goal is to build long-term confidence in cross-border scanning, making the behaviour as routine as domestic QR use. The organisation hopes this shift will further establish its role as a national facilitator of secure, seamless digital payments for Malaysians wherever they travel.
