Indonesia – TikTok Shop, the e-commerce arm of ByteDance Ltd., is cutting several hundred jobs in Indonesia as part of a restructuring effort following its acquisition of Tokopedia’s operations from local tech group GoTo.
According to a report from Bloomberg, which cited sources familiar with the matter, the layoffs affect staff across multiple departments, including logistics, operations, marketing, and warehousing. Additional reductions are expected as early as July, the report said. After the cuts, TikTok Shop and Tokopedia are estimated to have a combined workforce of about 2,500 in Indonesia.
A TikTok spokesperson said the company regularly evaluates its business structure to align with strategic goals, stating, “We continue to invest in Tokopedia and Indonesia as part of our strategy to drive sustainable growth and innovation.”
At the time of the merger’s completion, the combined e-commerce entity reportedly had a workforce of around 5,000 employees in Indonesia.
Meanwhile, Indonesia’s antitrust agency has raised concerns over potential market dominance following the acquisition. As reported by Reuters, the regulator noted an increase in market concentration and flagged possible post-merger risks, including higher prices and reduced competition.
The agency has imposed several conditions on TikTok and Tokopedia, such as maintaining open access for payment and logistics providers and avoiding practices like self-preferencing and predatory pricing. TikTok declined to comment on the antitrust review, while Tokopedia did not respond to Reuters’ request for comment.
Singapore – TikTok is laying off hundreds of employees globally, including a significant number in Malaysia, as it shifts towards increased use of AI for content moderation, the company announced on Friday.
Sources previously told Reuters that over 700 jobs were cut in Malaysia, though TikTok later clarified that fewer than 500 employees in the country were affected.
Most of the impacted employees worked in content moderation and were informed of their layoffs via email on Wednesday, according to anonymous sources who were not authorized to speak publicly.
In response to media inquiries, TikTok confirmed the global layoffs, stating that several hundred employees would be affected as part of a broader plan to enhance its moderation processes.
It is also planning more retrenchments next month as it looks to consolidate some of its regional operations, one of the sources said.
“We’re making these changes as part of our ongoing efforts to further strengthen our global operating model for content moderation,” a TikTok spokesperson said in a statement.
TikTok combines both automated tools and human moderators to review content on its platform. Parent company ByteDance, which has more than 110,000 employees in over 200 cities worldwide, is reportedly planning further layoffs next month as it consolidates some regional operations, according to one of the sources.
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – China’s ByteDance, the parent firm of the social media app TikTok, intends to invest around 10 billion ringgit (US$2.13b) to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) hub in Malaysia. As part of the agreement, ByteDance will also invest 1.5 billion ringgit to develop its data centre facilities in Malaysia’s Johor state. This is also part of the company’s several goals of expanding its IT services into Southeast Asia.
Speaking about the investment, Tengku Zafrul Aziz, Trade and Industry Minister, said, “This additional investment by ByteDance will undoubtedly help Malaysia achieve its target of growing the digital economy to 22.6% of Malaysia’s gross domestic product by 2025.”
In line with investments to develop artificial intelligence in Malaysia, Microsoft recently invested US$2.2b to develop Malaysia as a hub for cloud computing and related technologies like generative AI. Through the investment, Malaysia is set to become a hub for cloud computing and related technologies like generative AI. It will also help Malaysia to capitalise on the significant economic and productivity opportunities presented by AI technology.
Meanwhile, TikTok also recently launched new business solutions to enable businesses to explore new ground on TikTok, such as a new suite of creative AI tools, performance and measurement solutions, and improvements to high-impact branding placements. In line with the expanded commercial solutions, TikTok also established the ‘TikTok Media Buying Certification’ program to help businesses choose the ideal partner to power their TikTok campaigns. This global accreditation allows digital marketers to demonstrate and authenticate their TikTok advertising experience while also strengthening advertisers’ networks of trustworthy TikTok partners.
Furthermore, Tiktok has established a new leadership development program called ‘TikTok Academy: Elevate’ in Southeast Asian nations such as Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam. The programme provides challenges for participants to complete, with the goal of either encapsulating the session’s theme or leveraging participants’ strengths, enhancing their understanding of the evolving marketing landscape, emerging platforms such as TikTok for advertising and marketing, and providing space for self-reflection on their career growth.

This highlights the crucial role of creative and imaginative storytelling, not merely as a source of entertainment but as a potent force that captivates, motivates, and transforms the shared narrative journey.
