Manila, Philippines – Private operator Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) has launched ‘LRT-1 KasakaySayan’, a project aimed at incorporating Philippine history and culture into the daily commute of passengers on the LRT-1 line.
The initiative builds on the LRT-1’s designation as a “Heritage Line”, and is implemented in partnership with DDB Philippines and heritage advocacy group Renacimiento Manila. It centres on the concept of connecting commuters to historical narratives linked to the stations they travel through.

LRMC external relations head, Atty. Elaine B. Tiu, commented, “With ‘LRT-1 KasakaySayan,’ we are inserting vital factual information into the daily routine of our commuters, addressing the need for accessible education about our country’s relevant places and people. This project truly embodies our commitment to making history a part of every Filipino’s journey.”
Moreover, the integration will involve voice-over historical trivia into the public address systems of selected LRT-1 Generation 4 trains. The audio segments, designed as brief informational soundbites, are programmed to play automatically after standard “next station” announcements through a signalling-based system. Each segment is tailored to the station it precedes, providing context on the location or individual associated with the station name. The content is intended to reach a broad commuter base, including a significant number of students.
“LRMC envisioned ‘LRT-1 KasakaySayan’ as a journey back to our roots—a highlight on the people and places that built the Philippines. We believe that to truly understand our development as a nation, one must know the heroes who paved the way and the hallowed grounds where history was made. This is an exploration of the legacy that lives on in all of us,” DDB Philippines deputy executive creative director Jacqueline Caccam said.
Renacimiento Manila president & co-founder Diego Torres also commented, “The ‘LRT-1 KasakaySayan’ project greatly contributes to a deeper understanding not only of the history of LRT-1, but also of the place names that live on through its stations. These names—and the stories behind them—offer valuable insight into the history of Manila and its neighboring cities.”
“By presenting this information in a way that is accessible to everyday commuters, the project helps reconnect the public with the heritage they encounter on their daily journeys, from historical figures to historical events and famed locations. Renacimiento Manila fully supports this meaningful initiative by the LRMC,” he added.
Additionally, the initiative complements existing programmes such as the LRT-1 ‘ikotMNL Heritage Transit Tour’, conducted in collaboration with Renacimiento Manila, which offers guided visits to tourist sites near LRT-1 stations.
LRMC has also supported cultural projects, including the historical film ‘Lakambini’, which depicts the life of Filipina revolutionary Gregoria De Jesus.
