Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Ipsos has recently launched new data reflecting on the e-commerce landscape as well as the non-cash payment economy in Malaysia, highlighting how locals are becoming more adept at using non-cash services to make purchases for their online shopping.

Approximately 50% of Malaysians have made purchases on e-commerce platforms in the past six months, up from 39% in 2023. The popular product categories for online shopping include fashion items, groceries, accessories, and electronic devices.

In terms of market share, Shopee retains market leadership but experienced a 6% decline in market share. Meanwhile, TikTok Shop gained an 8% increase in market share, indicating strong competition. It is worth noting that 72% of respondents shopped in Shopee while 43% of respondents used TikTok Shop. Other platforms like Lazada and social media sites saw lower engagement.

Over at non-cash payment options, around 55% of Malaysians have used non-cash payments in the past three months, an increase of 4% from 2023. Moreover, e-wallet usage has increased by 14% compared to 2023, with 92% of e-wallet users reported using e-wallets in the past three months. Daily usage of e-wallets has also risen, with 51% of users aged 25-34 and 42% of users aged 45-74 using them daily.

Touch ‘n Go is the most widely used e-wallet, followed by MAE. There is a notable increase in MAE usage among those aged 35-44 and in the East region .

It is also worth noting that the increase in e-wallet usage is accompanied by a slight decrease in credit card usage, while debit card usage has increased by 2%. Moreover, the most significant growth in e-wallet usage is for retail purchases, food and beverage outlets, and online purchases,

Lastly, younger generations (18-24 years old) show a significant increase in e-wallet usage, with a 21% rise, while online bank transfers are more popular among those aged 35-44.

Manila, Philippines – Local-based telecommunications company PLDT has recently partnered up with e-commerce Shopee’s payment platform ShopeePay to bring convenience to payment gateways for services provided by the local telco.

The recent partnership aims at providing more payment service options for PLDT customers in settling their payments for postpaid plans, WiFi, and other bills.

Users can pay through ShopeePay in the Shopee app, under the “Load, Bills & eServices” option.

Perak, Malaysia – In a move towards a cashless society in the Malaysian state of Perak, Malaysian fintech startup KiplePay and local holdings Digital Perak recently collaborated for the development of a unified payment platform for cashless convenience among citizens and merchants for their government and business transactions.

For the initial phase, citizens can pay for their availed services within the locality through the Digital Perak web portal. Services include training courses, co-working space, computer lab, and office service rental on local multimedia hub Hub Innovasi and Multimedia (HiM). They can also pay for services such as asset booking, quit rent and summon payment with agencies, municipal councils, and other Government Linked Companies (GLC) within the state.

As for businesses, those that are registered under S.M.A.R.T Niaga@Perak, Digital Perak’s program for trading items locally, may now provide cashless transactions for in-store and online transactions. Merchants may also use KiplePay’s merchant app for in-store transactions, while online transactions are processed through theKipleBiz Unified Payment platform. Said platform will support multiple gateway payment services, including online banking, e-wallet, and debit/credit card.

Manila, Philippines – Philippine mobile service provider Smart Communications has teamed up with Southeast Asian e-commerce platform Shopee to give Smart postpaid users the option of paying their bill through ShopeePay.

Regulated under the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, ShopeePay is a mobile wallet which allows users to cash in and pay for items within the Shopee app.

With this partnership, Smart postpaid users can easily and securely pay for their postpaid bill directly on the Shopee app.

To pay for their postpaid bill, users need to log-in to the Shopee app, activate the ShopeePay wallet, and then top up with their selected payment method. Afterwards, users need to go to “Load, Bills & eServices,” tap “Postpaid Mobile” and then “Select Smart or Sun as the Biller.”

Subscribers of Smart Bro Postpaid and Sun Postpaid can also use the feature. Pay settlement through ShopeePay will also allow users to redeem Shopee coins which can be used for other purchases in the Shopee app.
