Agency Leadership Decoded: Shermaine Wong’s blueprint for scaling creativity with clarity at Cult Creative

For Shermaine Wong, co-founder and CEO of Cult Creative, leadership has never been about lofty ideals—it is about building creative systems that work.

In MARKETECH APAC’s Agency Leadership Decoded series, Wong opens up about leading one of Southeast Asia’s most exciting creative-tech ventures, where imagination meets infrastructure and ideas are treated with the same discipline as innovation.

Under her guidance, Cult Creative has evolved from a bold vision into a thriving ecosystem at the heart of the region’s creator economy.

As she puts it, “My leadership is rooted in clarity, accountability, and scalability. I see creativity not as a romantic ideal but as something to be effectively executed. At Cult Creative, we focus on building the framework for the creator economy in Southeast Asia. My core principle is simple: vision without execution is just noise.”

That principle has translated into impressive momentum.

The company has grown, expanding its footprint in Singapore, and collaborated with major global brands including Reckitt Group, Marriott Bonvoy International, and Samsung.

“We are now entering the next phase of our journey, an AI-powered infrastructure designed to seamlessly connect creators and brands through data-driven matching, predictive performance insights, and scalable creative intelligence,” Wong explained.

“This evolution aims to turn the subjective nature of creativity into something more precise, while still maintaining the human touch that makes creativity powerful,” she added.

Leadership shaped by loss, resilience, and reinvention

Wong’s leadership philosophy was not formed overnight. It was shaped by moments of profound challenge and transformation.

“In the early days, I led through action, from pitching and execution to solving problems myself,” she reflected. “As we grew, I realised leadership isn’t about control; it’s about clarity and trust.”

The pandemic became a crucible for her leadership, testing both her company’s resilience and her own.

The sudden passing of her co-founder added an unimaginable layer of grief and responsibility.

“The pandemic and my co-founder’s sudden passing were pivotal moments that challenged our business model, our team, and my capacity to lead,” she shared.

“These experiences strengthened my resilience and sped up my growth. I learned to make tough decisions with both precision and empathy. Losing someone who helped build Cult Creative reminded me that leadership is about ensuring continuity and carrying the mission forward, even in the face of grief, Wong recalled.

For her, those hard-won lessons gave her leadership both gravity and grace. “Regional expansion then brought discipline, teaching me that resilience needs structure,” she said. “Today, I focus on building systems, culture, and teams capable of maintaining momentum, because authentic, lasting leadership depends on it.”

Building diversity into the company’s DNA

At the core of Cult Creative’s culture is a belief in diversity, individuality, and self-worth—not as abstract ideals, but as working principles.

“These aren’t just personal beliefs; they are the core values that define Cult Creative’s very essence,” Wong said. “We prioritise diversity, individuality, and self-worth in everything we do, whether it’s hiring, developing products, or creating campaigns.”

Staying connected with culture is her own brand of strategic advantage.

“These principles are deeply embedded in our work because staying connected with culture gives us a competitive edge,” she noted, explaining that as a Southeast Asian company, she developed an understanding on the importance of expression across languages, subcultures, and identities.

Rather than chasing global trends, her team filters them through a regional lens.

“Instead of chasing global trends, we interpret them through a regional lens. This cultural insight allows us to help brands communicate authentically with local audiences while growing their influence,” Wong explained.

“Diversity isn’t just a statement—it’s the foundation that keeps us relevant,” she added.

Leading with performance, not perception

As a woman at the intersection of creativity and technology, Wong understands that advocacy alone does not erase bias—but performance can.

“I don’t walk into rooms to prove my worth; I walk in to contribute. Our regional recognition and trust from enterprises speak volumes, driven by our results rather than perceptions,” she asserted.

Wong believes inclusivity should be structural, not symbolic.

“I also believe inclusivity should be a core part of systems. From hiring practices to success metrics, representation is built into our processes, not treated as an afterthought,” she said.

Her results-driven leadership style has redefined what it means to lead with both empathy and evidence, ensuring that equality is not just spoken about but systematically embedded.

Structure through chaos: finding calm in creation

Running a company that bridges creativity and commerce demands clarity under constant motion.

For Wong, that balance comes from discipline.

“I build structure through chaos,” she said. “As a CEO, wife, and mother of three, discipline isn’t just an option—it’s vital for survival. I see focus as a valuable asset, guiding my day with clear priorities rather than endless activity.”

Her creative rhythm begins with focus and conviction.

“I protect time for strategic thinking, learning, and engaging with the creator community, where innovation starts,” she added. “True calm comes from conviction, knowing what’s most important, and confidently saying no to distractions. My role is to make sure the company’s energy stays focused on meaningful impact rather than noise.”

That discipline has become her quiet superpower—a structure strong enough to hold chaos and creativity in the same hand.

Redefining ambition and legacy for Southeast Asia

Looking ahead, Wong is determined to redefine what ambitious leadership means in the region—blending creativity, community, and commercial strength into a single, scalable vision.

Wong aims to redefine the definition of leadership in the region, “My goal is to show that creativity, community, and commercial success are not mutually exclusive; they create a powerful formula.”

“Cult Creative is building an AI-powered creator marketing platform to expand this formula, where data supports human creativity rather than replacing it,” she explained.

More than anything, Wong hopes her leadership journey inspires others to pursue innovation with integrity.

“I want future founders and leaders to see that innovation grounded in integrity leads to lasting impact,” she said.

“I want women and aspiring founders to know they can build something meaningful, raise a family, and lead confidently without apology. If my legacy is anything, I hope it’s that I built trust in our industry, our region, and in the idea that creativity can be the foundation of a billion-dollar business,” Wong concluded.

For Wong, it is never about being the loudest in the room—it is about being the clearest.

Her leadership continues to remind the industry that creativity, when executed with discipline and heart, does not just inspire—it endures.
