Singapore – Tech jobs in Singapore have been found to decrease in terms of demand and relevance in 2024, according to global job platform Indeed’s ‘Top 20 Best Jobs List’ for this year, which is based on salary, employer demand and the consistent growth in the number of job postings from 2021 to 2024.

In 2023, tech-focused roles took nine spots in Indeed’s top twenty list, whereas this year, only software engineers feature, with this current list also veering towards engineering and managerial roles.

Directors of communications topped the list as the best job in Singapore, with tax managers, recruitment managers, senior mechanical engineers and procurement managers making up the top five.

Notably, Indeed mentions that the occupations with the largest percentage growth in job postings in the last three years include software engineers (122%), tax managers (106%) and clinic managers (85%). Roles witnessing the highest number of postings per one million total jobs were quantity surveyors (6,912), project engineers (6,695) and accountants (3,948).

Talking about the list, Saumitra Chand, career expert at Indeed, said, “Singapore’s best jobs list for 2024 mirrors the macro trends that are happening on a global level. Tech-based roles no longer dominate, highlighting the sector’s growing troubles, with layoffs and funding issues rife throughout the industry.”

“However, it’s important to note that tech jobs are still available; they are just not seeing the exponential growth of previous years”, he added.

Singapore – A new report from Indeed notes that job opportunities utilising generative artificial intelligence (AI) are increasing in Singapore, with one in every 490 Singapore job postings are related to generative AI recorded by end of August.

Callam Pickering, APAC senior economist at Indeed, said, “The number may not seem like a big number but it is rapidly increasing. Artificial intelligence is hardly new but it continues to evolve. This year, we’ve seen the emergence of large language models, such as ChatGPT, which create the illusion of real intelligence. These tools have the potential to fundamentally change the future of work and are already being incorporated into many Singapore jobs.”

The data also noted that Singapore job postings fell 1.9% in August compared with a month earlier – the tenth consecutive monthly decline – which left postings almost 20% lower than a year ago.

While Singapore job postings are at their lowest level since August 2021, they are still 63% above their level prior to the pandemic.

Moreover, postings in 16% of occupational categories have increased over the past three months, led by strong gains in veterinary (+59%), physicians & surgeons (+42%) and pharmacy roles (+27%).

By comparison, declines have been widespread, with postings in beauty & wellness and civil engineering both down by around 21% over the past three months. Sizable declines were also observed in legal, cleaning & sanitation, chemical engineering and driving roles.

“Singapore’s labour market remains incredibly tight, with unemployment low and job vacancies still elevated. Nevertheless, job postings continue to moderate, having fallen for ten consecutive months. These declines have been broad-based, reflecting most occupational categories. A more challenging economic environment will likely lead to a further decline in job postings over the remainder of the year,” Pickering concluded.

India – Job platform Indeed has launched a new brand campaign called ‘#HireBetter’ which highlights the issues that companies face if one does not rely on proper recruitment tools to hire employees.

Conceptualised and created by DDB Mudra, the ad campaign is directed by Vivek Kakkad. The series consists of three ads and showcases hilarious goof-ups when hiring through referrals in three different scenarios. The concept pulls from the insight that while there’s a shift in online recruitment for SMBs, oftentimes SMBs still rely on their first party sources to hire.

The ad films and creatives will be spread across various digital and print platforms that employers and job seekers choose to watch such as YouTube and physical press across regional and national newspapers.

Nishita Lalvani, director at Indeed India and SEA, said, “Our campaign is focused on reaching out to SMBs – the high-growth market in India. This campaign will address their concerns regarding hiring employees, through a series of relatable films which resonate with them. Indeed provides easy hiring solutions for SMBs and aims to constantly innovate to help these companies find the right talent through its platform.”

Meanwhile, Sooraj R Pillai, senior creative director at DDB Mudra, commented, “Hiring in small and medium businesses in India gets done through word of mouth over legitimate channels. And this may turn out to be a problem since the owners appoint employees with mediocre aptitude, causing potential losses for the businesses.”

Pillai added, “The objective of this campaign was to target SMB owners specifically and encourage them to subscribe to the platform. Thus, changing their typical approach towards hiring and their standard practice of appointing someone they know instead of hiring someone who knows what to do.”
